Galveston Island is only about a 40-minute drive from Houston, but it might as well be in another world. Located on the sunny Gulf of Mexico, it's a perfect location for a romantic excursion. The historic Strand offers antiques shopping and strolling. If the weather is bad, nearby Moody Gardens features enclosed glass pyramids with a rainforest and even an indoor beach.
Many of the area's bed and breakfasts are located in lovingly renovated Victorian homes. In order to maintain a peaceful vacation atmosphere, many of these bed and breakfasts do not allow pets or young children under 13, so call ahead if you want to bring Fido or little Fred along.
At only two miles wide, you can tour much of Galveston by foot. Try out the many restaurants, check out the harbor life or just go beach combing. Or if you prefer, rent some bicycles to zip up and down the island. With all there is to enjoy, Galveston Island is a great getaway for couples of all ages.
